5 Ecommerce Design Mistakes

By Trevor Sadowski

Every wise marketer knows that good ecommerce design is essential to the success of their web site.

Good ecommerce design ensures that your customers feel comfortable navigating around your site and it draws customers into the inner pages effortlessly, through the clever use of a subtle color scheme and well drafted sales copy.

Not everyone knows about the finer points of ecommerce design however and here are five of the most common mistakes we see being made:

Ignorance of the color wheel

You must have seen those sites for which color blending and matching is a foreign concept. I am talking about the sites that have bold, garish colors that pulsate out of your computer screen, no sign of a well thought out ecommerce design here.

You need to make use of the color wheel to investigate what colors go together or failing that, see what color schemes the highly ranked web sites in your niche have chosen for their ecommerce design and follow suit.

Slow loading pages

Nothing is more frustrating to users than waiting for web pages to load, in fact as technology improves people seem to be getting less and less patient. Internet users are quick to reach for the back button on their browsers and you need to design a fast loading site to keep their attention.

Graphics are a common cause of speed issues you need to optimise them for the web as part of your ecommerce design process using a specialist graphics package like Adobe Photoshop.

Links that go nowhere

A site that has broken links only goes towards making a bad impression and this is almost always met by the use of the back button.

It is very easy to test your links and there is really no excuse for not doing so.

Too many steps in the order process

Customers ordering on the web need to be guided towards a simple checkout process, the fewer steps toward final checkout the better.

Do not make the mistake in your ecommerce design of asking for too many personal details and make sure you reassure customers as to the security of their personal data.

Limiting your payment methods

The final common mistake in ecommerce design is that of limiting the payment methods by which your customer can settle their account.

It does not cost you any more to offer debit cards and perhaps online checks as payment methods so why limit your sales potential?

Good ecommerce design is about function as much as visual qualities. The overall guiding principle is to make your customer comfortable exploring your site through a clear, logical menu structure and intuitive design.

Familiarize Yourself with the Most Essential Web Design Tools

Author: Chris
The internet, having started as a clumsy, unending stream of nothing but text, has evolved into a sleek, enticing, playground where people can indulge their interests in any subject without getting bored.
If you know something about the basic web design tools, you too can play a part in making this sophisticated system do its thing. The available tools today are very specialized and some incredibly complex, but they are always changing, and the things that will be simple tomorrow may be unimaginable to all but the most devoted today.

There are some basic languages any web developer should be at least marginally familiar with. These include, of course, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP, as well as more ambitious complete systems such as Django, Plone, and Zope, which in fact go so far as to include programs that run on a server to dynamically create a web page every time it's accessed. But while it's good to use these regularly and especially important to know the differences between all of them, none of them will be very useful without being able to see how the finished product will look. For that, you'll need to install a web server on your local computer. This can be done without any other computer being able to access your server, just for you to view works in progress, or it can actually constitute a part of the internet; you can actually run it on your computer and serve pages directly to internet users. One of the most popular servers is Apache, but there are also versions published by Microsoft that are pretty popular. Apache, of course, is completely free to use, which is an advantage for many users.

Together with a server on your computer to try out the content you create, the list above will be a good start for your collection of web design tools.

The 2010 Web Design Top Picks and Trends

The year 2010 is more than halfway through, and while there are amazing new website designs being launched regularly, the trend for the year has been established. Before the end of 2009, there were already predictions on what the 2010 top website designs would be. One of the predictions, if it could be called that, was that websites would turn minimalist.

And it did. We see the top website design for 2010 consistently across the board as having one or two main focuses on its main page, and not a lot of text. In fact, some of the hottest minimalist website designs have but a couple of words, some of them just the name of the product coupled with an amazing product shot. Nothing over the top, stark simple, but it gets your attention in a snap.

Defining The Principles Of Logo Design

Author: Logo Mojo
Generally, all the principles of design apply to any piece you may create. How you apply those principles determines how effective your design is in conveying the desired message and how attractive it appears. There is seldom only one correct way to apply each principle.
Balance Visual balance comes from arranging elements on the page so that no one section is heavier than the other. Or, a designer may intentionally throw elements out of balance to create tension or a certain mood.
Proximity / Unity Observe a group of people in a room. You can often learn a lot about who is listening intently to another person, which are strangers, or who is ignoring who by how close together they sit or stand. In design, proximity or closeness creates a bond between people and between elements on a page. How close together or far apart elements are placed suggests a relationship (or lack of) between otherwise disparate parts. Unity is also achieved by using a third element to connect distant parts.
Alignment Can you imagine how difficult it would be to find your car in a crowded parking lot if everyone ignored the parking lot stripes and parked in every which direction and angle? Imagine trying to get out of there! Alignment brings order to chaos, in a parking lot and on a piece of paper. How you align type and graphics on a page and in relation to each other can make your layout easier or more difficult to read, foster familiarity, or bring excitement to a stale design.
Repetition / Consistency Repeating design elements and consistent use of type and graphics styles within a document shows a reader where to go and helps them navigate your designs and layouts safely.
Contrast On the basketball court, one pro team looks much like another. But send a few of those players for a stroll down most any major city street and something becomes apparent - those players are much taller than your average guy on the street. That's contrast. In design, big and small, black and white, squares and circles, all create contrast in design.
White Space Designs that try to cram too much text and graphics onto the page are uncomfortable and may be impossible to read. White space gives your design breathing room.

Best Practices for Designing Usable Websites for Kids

Designing for young kids is something not a lot of designers think about until approached by a client who wants to target that age group.

But the truth is that kids in the 3-12 age group are using the Internet in surprising numbers. Ten years ago, it was rare for a child who hadn’t even yet reached school-age to use a computer. Now, there are a surprising number of websites specifically catering to them. And that number is growing all the time.

The Nielsen Norman Group, long known for their usability studies, has recently completed a study on the Internet habits and related usability issues often encountered by kids in the 3-12 age group.

The report is based on actual user studies, rather than just surveys asking kids what their internet habits and experiences are, and provide invaluable insight into the real usability issues confronting kids, and what users can do about it.

10 Usability Tips for Web Designers

A common misconception about usability amongst web companies is that usability is expensive. Yes, there are multi-national companies that spend thousands of dollars on usability tests and research, but for an everyday company usability is achievable without the knowledge of usability experts or without expensive equipment for testing.

Web designers have an even easier job to do, just by reading usability articles they can accumulate a fairly good knowledge about usability basics and how to implement them on a website.

55 Ways to Relax After Work

Do you ever feel like a zombie after a long day at work? You feel so depleted and tired. You hardly have any energy left at all. The only thing you want to do is eat comfort food, pop open a brewski and watch television until bedtime.

We’ve all been there. Zoning out in front of the TV can be a great way to relax, but more often than not, it just makes you feel even more useless. Sitting immobile on the couch for extended periods of time can reinforce your own sense of helplessness and exhaustion, especially if it becomes your regular evening routine.

Although it can be difficult to rally enough energy after a tough day, sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is to get off the couch, turn off the TV and find something better to do (sorry to sound so much like your mother, but she was right). If you’re drawing a blank on what else to do with your time, don’t worry. We’ve got a few ways to relax that will help you feel less like a soulless blob and more like a happy, fulfilled human being.

Palm WebOS 2.0 beta released to developers

Palm's WebOS 2.0 beta is now available in limited release to developers, with a full public release planned for later this year.

Palm announced the Software Developer Kit today on its Web site describing several improvements, including a focus on "Stacks" for better multitasking and a "Quick Actions" way of searching or creating an e-mail without launching an app.

Hewlett-Packard completed its purchase of Palm on July 1. HP officials have said they will release a WebOS tablet computer in early 2011 , but the OS version has not been specified. Another HP tablet based on Windows 7 for enterprise users is expected this fall. And HP is reportedly working on an Android -based tablet, although some bloggers have said that device has been shelved -- something HP hasn't confirmed.

Palm launched Palm Pre and Palm Pixi smartphones based on the first WebOS version, and HP said it will continue using WebOS in smartphones, as well as in tablets and netbooks .

The WebOS 2.0 Stacks feature takes the card metaphor seen in the Palm Pre to another level by grouping related cards into stacks, Palm said. The change is designed to reduce clutter and make it easy to move quickly between tasks. A user can drag and drop cards or the OS can automatically stack them.

The Quick Actions feature is part of what Palm calls "Just Type," a new name for universal search. With Quick Actions, a user can launch an e-mail, update a social network status or do a Web search without needing to launch an app.

Developers using Just Type will be able to give users real-time suggestions as they use an application, as long as the data for the app is stored on the user's device.

Other changes include "Exhibition," which allows developers to build ways for users to see apps when a Palm phone is placed on the Touchstone Charging Dock. Exhibition can be added to support an existing app, so the day's agenda or a slideshow can be shown on a phone on the Touchstone.

HTML5 enhancements are part of the new version, too.

Palm noted that the features are "slated" for the WebOS 2.0 but might not actually appear in the first public release.

Free Web Developers Stuff

Bravenet
They offer tons of free resources for your website including Human Click (visitors can see if you're online and page you, right from your website!), polls, guest books, forums, chat rooms, free storage space, tickers, password protection and much more (way to much to list here!).

Firefox
OK, it's not directly a tool just for a webmaster, but there are a ton of extensions that make it incredibly useful (Web Developer Toolbar, HTML Validator, DOM Inspector and Live HTTP Headers just to name a few). And it's faster, safer and well.. in my opinion, better than Internet Explorer.
The web developer in me wants proper CSS support, and the surfer in me want a safe, secure and fast way to wander the web. Well, FireFox delivers both and it's totally customizable! It's been my default browser since it was still in beta. Download it and see for yourself!
